Finding God in the Quiet
Discover peace and clarity in moments of solitude.
Beloved Friend,
I recently shared that I had been reading and learning a lot about dopamine detox. A lot of people were either interested in it or already on the journey. This shows that many of us are beginning to realize the toll that constant stimulation takes on our minds and hearts. In the midst of our fast-paced, noisy world, it often feels impossible to find a moment of peace. The constant demands of work, social obligations, and the endless stream of information can leave us feeling overwhelmed and disconnected. Yet, in these moments of chaos, there lies an invitation to step away, to embrace the silence, and to find solace in God's presence.
The Bible often speaks to the power and necessity of solitude. Jesus himself regularly withdrew to solitary places to pray (Luke 5:16). It is in these quiet moments that we can truly hear God's voice, away from the distractions and noise that fill our daily lives.
"Be still, and know that I am God." - Psalm 46:10
Being still is not merely about physical stillness but about quieting our hearts and minds. It is about creating space for God to speak, to comfort, and to guide us. In this stillness, we are reminded of His sovereignty and His intimate love for us.
When we intentionally carve out time to be alone with God, we open ourselves to a deeper relationship with Him. This solitude is not about isolation but about communion. It’s about finding a sacred space where we can pour out our hearts and listen for His whispers.
"But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed." - Luke 5:16
My journey with this newsletter is a testament to the power of solitude. For years, God had been telling me to write for Him, but I didn’t know how to begin or what exactly I was supposed to be writing. The noise of work and the constant rush to be doing something “productive” made it even harder to hear His voice. It wasn't until I was called into a period of solitude, coupled with prayer and fasting, that I was able to hear God clearly.
During this time, I realized that even when we fast to seek God's face, our minds can still be incredibly busy. We might be distracted by our situations or our environment, preventing us from truly hearing Him. It was in the quiet of solitude that I finally received the guidance and clarity I needed. This sacred practice became a sanctuary where I could recharge, realign with God's purpose for my life, and start this newsletter to share His message.
Sometimes, we avoid silence and solitude because what truly frightens us is not others, but facing ourselves. It’s easier to navigate the surface-level interactions of life than to delve into the depths of our own hearts. Yet, solitude is not isolation. It’s a deliberate choice to seek God's presence and wisdom in the quiet moments of our lives. Unfortunately, many people remain shallow in their relationship with God because they prioritize isolation over solitude. Instead of spending time studying the Bible or reflecting on their faith, they immerse themselves in distractions like constant phone usage or seeking validation from social media. This superficial engagement with the world leaves them spiritually empty, lacking the depth and richness that comes from intimacy with God in solitude. We are made in ABBA’s image, and part of that is being made for community.
"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up." - Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
Solitude is not loneliness. It’s a time to be alone with God, not to be cut off from others. In solitude, we create a space where God can speak to us more clearly. It’s a time to be still and know that He is God, allowing His presence to fill our hearts and minds.
Many people go to the mountains or retreats just to spend time alone with God. These places offer a refuge from the hustle and bustle of daily life, providing an environment conducive to deep spiritual reflection and connection. For those who can afford to and truly need this time away, it can be an incredibly enriching experience.
However, you don't have to go to the mountains or a retreat to find solitude with God. Even if we can’t afford to go on retreats as often as we want to, we can still live in solitude daily. Solitude can be found in the quiet moments of our everyday lives. It could be in the early morning before the world wakes up, during a lunch break spent in silent prayer, or in the evening as we wind down. The key is to be intentional about creating these spaces and dedicating them to God.
Imagine starting your day with a few minutes of silence, simply sitting in God’s presence. Letting go of your worries and focusing on His love and grace. This practice can become a sanctuary in your routine, a place where you can recharge and realign with God's purpose for your life.
In our solitude, we find the strength to filter out the noise and focus on what truly matters. We learn to hear God’s voice above the clamor, guiding us with wisdom and love. This sacred practice can ground us, giving us the clarity and peace that our souls long for.
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." - Matthew 11:28
God’s invitation to rest in Him is a reminder that we do not have to carry our burdens alone. In solitude, we find rest for our weary souls. We find a space where we can be vulnerable, where we can lay down our burdens and receive His peace.
Many people who have received so much clarity in their life journeys, who live productive lives, doing great kingdom exploits and walking in their purpose, have found that their breakthrough came from a place of solitude. Even successful businesspeople and those with fresh, innovative ideas often attribute their success to the moments they spent alone, seeking God’s guidance.
"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you." - Psalm 32:8
Friend, as you navigate the demands of your life, remember to seek out these moments of quiet. Be intentional about finding time to be alone with God, to listen for His voice, and to rest in His presence. In doing so, you will discover a deeper, more fulfilling relationship with Him and a peace that transcends all understanding.
With thoughts of kindness,
