Purity: A Timeless Virtue in Today’s World.
Upholding God's Standards in Challenging Times
Beloved Friend,
First, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for subscribing to this newsletter. Reaching 100 subscribers on Substack is truly amazing, especially in a time when life moves so fast. Many people prefer watching quick videos over reading, so I deeply appreciate you taking the time to read and engage with what God has placed on my heart.
Today, I want to talk about something that might seem old-fashioned but is still very important to God: purity. In our busy, sometimes confusing world, staying pure can feel difficult. We are constantly bombarded with content that can lead us away from God’s path. But God's standards have not changed. He still calls us to live pure lives in every area.
Guarding Our Eye Gate
Our eyes are powerful—they capture images that can stay with us long after we've seen them. What we see influences our thoughts and actions more than we realize. Images have a way of embedding themselves in our minds, affecting how we view ourselves and others. This is why it’s crucial to be intentional about what we expose ourselves to.
"I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless." - Psalm 101:3
Guarding Our Ear Gate
As musical beings, the sounds and vibrations we listen to have a profound impact on us. Secular music, while catchy and entertaining, often promotes values and messages contrary to God’s Word. Even if we don’t actively listen to it, our minds can retain its melodies and lyrics, influencing our thoughts and emotions. This is why we can’t easily get songs we see on TikTok out of our head after scrolling through our feeds for hours.
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." - Romans 12:2
Guarding Our Heart and Mind
The Bible often refers to guarding our hearts rather than just our minds. Our hearts encompass our emotions, desires, and innermost being. What we allow into our hearts—through what we see, hear, and think—shapes who we become. Our thoughts are powerful; they can either lead us closer to God or steer us away from His will.
"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." - Proverbs 4:23
Friend, in a world filled with countless voices, it’s essential to be discerning and filter out the noise. We become who we listen to and watch. Just as spending time with friends and family influences us and we easily adopt their mannerism, prolonged exposure to media can shape our beliefs and attitudes. The culture of the world system often introduces ideas subtly through what we watch, making them seem normal over time.
Consider how perceptions have shifted regarding certain societal issues. Initially, many found certain topics shocking or unacceptable, but through repeated exposure in media, these ideas have become normalized. This is why monitoring what our children watch and read is crucial—it shapes their understanding and worldview from a young age.
Friend, lets consider practical ways to maintain purity in our daily lives:
Content Filters: Use content filters on devices to block inappropriate material.
Uplifting Media: Choose music, movies, and books that align with biblical values. Meditate on the word of God even as you go about your daily activities.
Allow the Holy Spirit Filter Your Circle and Set Boundaries: Establish boundaries in relationships to avoid compromising situations. You already know that the friends you keep can either make or mar you. Not every believer should even be your friend, be discerning! The fact that they post about God doesn’t mean they live the life Christ portrayed. Even the devil masquerades as an angel of light. This is not a time to run after aesthetically pleasing ‘believers’. Let the Spirit of truth guide and direct you into all truth.
Let’s be vigilant in guarding what enters our minds and hearts. By focusing on truth and aligning ourselves with God’s Word, we can resist the pressures of the world and live lives that honor Him.
Thank you again, beloved friend, for your support and for being part of this journey. May God bless you abundantly as you seek to live a life of purity.
With thoughts of kindness,
Abba’s Shofar
