Stay Woke: Don’t Let Life Lull You to Sleep
A Call to Watchfulness and Awareness
Beloved Friend,
Have you ever walked into a room and completely forgotten what brought you there in the first place? It’s funny how easily our focus can shift, how quickly distractions creep in and derail us. Now imagine that happening on a much larger scale, not just in a moment, but in life itself.
Sometimes, life feels like we’re running on a treadmill. We’re moving fast, yet going nowhere. Caught up in the rush, we go through the motions: study hard, get a job, chase dreams, fall in love, settle down. But do we ever pause long enough to ask ourselves, “Where is all this taking me?” Worse still, are we mindful of the subtle shifts in our character, passions, or priorities as we journey on?
The truth is, nothing disastrous ever happens all at once. Marriages don’t fall apart overnight. Addictions don’t start with one reckless decision. Anger doesn’t turn to bitterness in a single moment. It’s the small compromises, the unnoticed habits, the unchecked emotions that slowly lead us down paths we never meant to take.
Beloved, this is why the Bible constantly calls us to watchfulness and prayer. 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” The enemy’s strategy is slow and methodical. He doesn’t knock us down all at once. He chips away, little by little. That’s why we must guard our hearts diligently (Proverbs 4:23). What are you feeding your mind and spirit?
Struggling with lust? What music or images have you been exposing yourself to that feed that fire? Battling anxiety? Who are you listening to that fuels your fears instead of your faith? Wrestling with low self-esteem? Whose voice are you allowing to define your worth, God’s or the world’s? Always edgy or angry? What thoughts have you been nurturing, and what company are you keeping?
The Bible says in Philippians 4:8, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things.” What we dwell on shapes who we become.
The adversary’s plan thrives in distraction and comfort. He doesn’t want us mindful or vigilant. He loves it when we’re too tired to pray, too busy to seek God, or too distracted to notice our spiritual fervor fading. But Jesus warns us in Matthew 26:41, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Life moves quickly, but we must live beyond the motions. We cannot let the cycles of life, education, careers, family, consume us so much that we lose sight of our eternal purpose. Philippians 3:14 reminds us to press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
This world is not our home. We’re only passing through. Let us stay vigilant, mindful of what we allow into our hearts and lives. Let’s watch and pray, guarding against the little foxes that spoil the vine (Song of Solomon 2:15). Let’s live with intentionality, knowing that every decision matters in our spiritual journey.
