True Peace in the Midst of Life’s Storms
Holding Onto God’s Promises Through Life's Challenges
Beloved Friend,
As we journey through life, we often encounter storms that threaten to overwhelm us. Yet, true peace comes not from the absence of these storms but from the presence of Jesus in our lives. Today, let's dive into a profound story from the Gospel of Mark, where Jesus calms the storm and reveals essential truths about faith, peace, and God's promises.
Mark 4:35-41: "That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, 'Let us go over to the other side.' Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, 'Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?' He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, 'Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?' They were terrified and asked each other, 'Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!'"
Here, we read about Jesus and His disciples crossing the Sea of Galilee. As they sailed, a fierce storm arose, causing the disciples to fear for their lives. Yet, in the midst of the chaos, Jesus slept peacefully. When the terrified disciples woke Him, Jesus rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Immediately, the storm ceased, and there was a great calm.
When Jesus said, "Let us go over to the other side," He made a promise to His disciples. He didn’t say, “It’s a wrap! Let’s end our lives in the middle of the sea.” This assurance is crucial for us to remember. God’s promises are steadfast. He’s not a man that He should lie. Just as Jesus promised His disciples that they would reach the other side, He has promised us that He will be with us through every storm. Isaiah 43:2 (NIV):
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze."
Friends, reflecting on the story of Joseph, we see a similar theme. Joseph dreamt of greatness, yet his journey began with betrayal and slavery. Despite the storms he faced, Joseph held onto the vision God had given him. He trusted that God’s promises would prevail, and they did. Joseph's unwavering faith and reliance on God's word brought him peace even in the darkest times.
Genesis 37:5-7 (NIV):"Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. He said to them, 'Listen to this dream I had: We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.'"
We can see Jesus' true humanity in His need for sleep on the boat. Despite the many concerns that could have kept Him awake—such as the opposition from religious leaders, the constant demands from the crowds, and the knowledge of His impending suffering (There were times he went aside to pray cause He knew the hour was near) Jesus slept soundly. This illustrates His profound trust in God’s care. By resting in the midst of turmoil, Jesus shows us that true peace comes from faith, not the absence of difficulties.
Amidst the storm, the disciples’ cries woke Jesus. The wind, the arguing, and the water did not disturb Him, but the moment His disciples called out, He responded. This is a beautiful reminder that Jesus is ever attentive to our cries. Like a mother who hears her baby's slightest whimper, Jesus hears us and is ready to help us in our time of need.
There may be times when it feels like Jesus is sleeping through our troubles, and we constantly ask “God where are you?” Even if He appears to be asleep, He is always near the helm, ready to steer us safely when we call out to Him. Our heightened sense of dependence on Him during our deepest troubles is often what awakens His direct intervention.
When Jesus rebuked the wind and the waves, He did so with the same authority He used to rebuke demons. This wasn’t just a natural storm; it was a spiritual battle. Often, the storms in our lives have a spiritual dimension, and we must discern when we are under attack. Jesus demonstrated that He has authority over all things, both seen and unseen.
John 16:33 (NIV): "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
Not every trouble is meant to strengthen our faith or work out patience in us; some are attacks from the enemy. We must invite Jesus, the master of our boat, to intervene and command the enemy to take his hands off our lives.
Finally, we must remember that our faith journey impacts those around us. The storms in our lives can affect our families, friends, and even future generations. We owe it to them to step up in our Christian faith, trusting God’s promises and seeking His peace. Our steadfastness in faith can inspire and guide others through their storms.
Beloved, let us hold fast to the promises God has given us. In every storm, remember that Jesus is in your boat. Cry out to Him, trust in His power, and rest in His peace. He will guide you safely to the other side.
With thoughts of kindness,
