Unholy Alliances
When Compromise Undermines Faith and Values
Beloved Friend,
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you thought you were doing the right thing, only to realize later that you had to compromise your values? Today, let's dive into the intriguing and sometimes unsettling topic of unholy alliances—those partnerships that seem helpful but can lead us away from our core Christian principles.
In our complex world, it's easy to blur the lines between right and wrong. Whether these alliances emerge in politics, business, or even interfaith efforts, they can subtly influence our beliefs and actions.
Think about when a church supports a political candidate whose values don't fully align with Christian teachings (exactly why some preachers avoid talking about political candidates), or when Christian organizations collaborate with businesses that might not uphold ethical practices. These scenarios are all too common and can cause us to reflect on our own decisions and affiliations.
These things are even more particular with us as individuals. Often, we compromise without realizing or intending to, all in the guise of “no one is perfect” or the belief that one cannot be 100% spiritual without faltering a bit. How many times have we found ourselves justifying a small ethical slip because it seemed harmless or because everyone else was doing it?
Maybe it's accepting a business deal that requires bending the truth a little, or perhaps it's supporting a popular social cause that conflicts with our faith's teachings because we want to fit in or avoid conflict. These small compromises can add up, subtly shifting our moral compass away from Christ-centered values.
As we delve deeper into this topic, let’s examine how these unholy alliances manifest in our daily lives and what we can do to recognize and avoid them. Our goal is not to mainly achieve perfection, but to be more aware of the choices we make and their impact on our spiritual journey; remembering that as He is in earth so we ought to be on earth.
I’m excited to hear your stories and insights as we explore this together!
Let's start by examining the subtle ways these unholy alliances can infiltrate our lives.
Proverbs 13:20- “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”
Consider our daily interactions at work or in our communities. It’s easy to go along with the crowd, even when it means compromising our principles. Perhaps we find ourselves engaging in talk intended to bring down others, thinking it’s harmless or justifiable. Or we overlook unethical behavior in the workplace because confronting it seems too difficult (this one is a serious hassle). These are everyday examples where we might be tempted to compromise our values for the sake of convenience or social harmony.
Another common area is entertainment and media. How often do we consume content that conflicts with our Christian values, justifying it as harmless fun? The shows we watch, the music we listen to, and even the social media we engage with can subtly shape our beliefs and behaviors. Without realizing it, we form alliances with ideas and values that are not aligned with our faith.
Romans 12:2 "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."
Similarly, think about the fashion industry. Many designers create provocative styles because that’s what customers want, forgetting that as Christians, we are called to be separate from worldly desires. I recently watched a video of a lady on YouTube who was in conflict about making a jumpsuit for a gay wedding. She couldn't proceed because of her faith but also knew it would cause serious provocation. This raises a challenging question for all of us: Can you stand for your faith even when you know you'll be met with serious opposition?
Reflecting on these challenges, a friend once shared with me a powerful experience. He reached out, saying there was a time he was faced with a decision that would compromise his values. Instantly, he thought about what I would have done in that situation or what my thoughts would have been on it. Thinking about this made him decide he wasn’t going to go ahead with it. This is not to say that I have an utmost perfect standing in Christ, but to think that a Holy Alliance has been formed for such reference to be made speaks volumes about the impact of our faith communities on our decisions and actions.
Then there are the bigger, more obvious alliances, such as those in our political or social lives. Supporting a political candidate or a social movement that doesn't fully align with our Christian values because they promise economic benefits or social reforms can lead to significant compromises. While it’s important to engage with the world and strive for positive change, we must remain vigilant about the values we support and promote.
2 Corinthians 6:14-15 warns, "Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?"
So, how do we navigate these complex situations? It starts with awareness. Recognize the areas in your life where you might be forming unholy alliances. Reflect on the choices you make and the motivations behind them. Seek guidance through prayer and scripture, and don’t be afraid to seek counsel from trusted members of your faith community.
James 1:5 encourages us, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."
By staying grounded in our faith and being mindful of our actions, we can avoid these subtle compromises and remain true to our Christian values. Remember, the goal is not to be perfect immediately (cause if we do that in our strength, we’ll fail woefully) but to strive towards living a life that honors God in all aspects.
Galatians 5:25 encourages us, "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit."
I encourage you to share your experiences and thoughts. Let’s learn from each other and support one another in this journey of faith. Till I come your way again…
PS: It’s a new month and the fact that you’re still here means God isn’t done with you. Please be still and know that He is God.
With thoughts of Kindness,
