When Weary, Rest in God
Finding Strength in Our Weakness.
Continuing from where we left off last week, let’s address something we all face at one point or another: weariness. We’ve all experienced moments when life’s battles feel overwhelming, and the strength to carry on seems to fade. Whether it’s from physical exhaustion or spiritual fatigue, the weight can become heavy.
But here's a comforting truth: just as our mortal bodies get tired and need rest, our spirits can also grow weary. And that’s okay. The Bible acknowledges this reality, saying, “Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:30-31). This is not just a feeling; it’s a part of the human experience—even the strongest among us need renewal.
For me, when the noise of life becomes overwhelming, I’ve found that one of the most effective things I can do is to block out the distractions and rest. Sometimes, it’s as simple as taking a moment to breathe, to pause everything, and to be still. I’ve heard about how people who are sad or pressed on every side, sleep first and then wake up to strategize. It’s funny because it’s true—rest can change our perspective.
But here’s the thing: it’s even better when we rest in God. It’s not just about physical sleep; it’s about finding our rest in Him. Jesus invites us with open arms, saying, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). It’s an invitation to lay down our burdens at His feet, to find peace in His presence.
You know, there’s something to be said about pausing and retracing our steps when we’re in a frantic search for something. It’s in that moment of stopping, of stepping back, that clarity often comes. Similarly, when we rest in God, we gain the strategy we need to fight the battles that seem unending. David knew this well when he said, “Blessed be the Lord, my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle” (Psalm 144:1). It’s in those moments of rest, of pausing in God’s presence, that we’re equipped with the tools and the wisdom to continue the fight.
Now that we’ve talked about rest, let’s also consider nourishment. Just as our bodies need food to stay strong, our spirits need spiritual nourishment to stay strong in battle. How do we receive this nourishment?
Stay rooted in the Word: The Bible is our source of strength, guidance, and encouragement. When you immerse yourself in the Scriptures, you’re filling up on truth that can sustain you. Remember, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).
Pray without ceasing: Prayer is our lifeline to God. It’s where we draw strength, receive peace, and find direction. As it says in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, “Pray without ceasing.” Even in your weakest moments, lift up your heart to God and let Him refresh your spirit.
Lean on your spiritual community: You don’t have to go through this alone. God has placed people in your life to support and encourage you. Your spiritual community doesn’t need to be a large group; even a few friends who share your faith can make all the difference. “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). They can pray with you, speak life into your situation, and remind you of God’s promises.
Speak life over your situation: There’s power in your words. Speak life, not death, over your circumstances. Declare God’s promises and stand firm in your faith. This week, I’ve experienced firsthand just how powerful our confessions can be, especially when they’re grounded in Scripture. And believe me, I won’t be stopping anytime soon. “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18:21).
Beloved friend, if you’re feeling weary today, take it as a sign that it’s time to rest—not just physically, but spiritually. Allow yourself the grace to step back and rest in God’s presence. He’s not asking you to do it all in your own strength. He’s inviting you to lean on Him, to let Him carry the weight that’s too heavy for you to bear alone.
Rest in Him, renew your strength, and nourish your spirit. When you’re ready, rise up with the assurance that you’re not fighting alone. You’ve got this because He’s got you.
